Pink Oyster Grow Block
Our Pink Oyster mushroom grow blocks are perfect for beginners. They grow best in temperatures between 16-32°C but will still grow in cooler temperatures, at a slower rate the colder it gets. They can also fruit in temperatures roughly 5°C warmer than the maximum temporarily.
We use these blocks to grow all the mushrooms on our farm and they are much larger than other grow kits, weighing over 4.5kg. Our substrate is carefully blended using W.A. Eucalyptus, legumes and rain water for giant harvests of nutrient-dense mushrooms.
They simply require light misting with a spray bottle of water 2-3 times per day and can optionally include a continuous fine mist bottle. They are a living fungal organism and should be cut open to supply them with fresh air within 3 days of receiving them. Pink Oysters do not store well for long periods of time and cannot be refridgerated to delay opening like other species as they are a tropical species which cannot survive below 10°C. The optimal temperatures for Pink Oysters are 16-32°C but they can tolerate temperatures outside this range. They prefer warmth but will still grow in cooler temperatures, just much slower.
Pink Oysters are famous for their meaty texture and bacon-like flavour when they are salted and fried until brown and crispy. These bright pink mushrooms are perfect for breakfasts or any occasion calling for bacon. They have large, thick caps with tiny stems which are usually removed due to their tougher texture. They have the shortest shelf life of the Oyster mushrooms and should ideally be cooked within 2-3 days.
Oyster mushrooms are a delicacy in Japanese, Chinese and Korean cuisine and are frequently served in soups or stir fries. They are much more flavourful than button mushrooms and make a great replacement in a variety of dishes. They can be sautéed with butter or olive oil, salt and commonly garlic to make a delicious standalone dish or the perfect addition to burgers, sandwiches and salads.
Oyster mushrooms are very easily digested and are one of the only Low-FODMAP certified mushroom species. Like all mushrooms, they should always be cooked thoroughly before eating so that you can properly digest them and they will develop their rich umami flavours.
Oyster mushrooms contain a variety of powerful compounds and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Compared with button mushrooms, Oyster mushrooms contain twice the amount of beta-glucan, a famous polysaccharide known for a range of benefits. They are also extraordinarily rich in antioxidants including ergothioneine, which has been found in remarkably high concentrations in Yellow Oysters. You can find many YouTube videos and scientific studies on the benefits of including these mushrooms in your diet.
Oyster mushrooms are especially rich in B Vitamins compared with other mushrooms, including Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pantothenic Acid (B5), Pyridoxine (B6) and Folic Acid (B9). They are a great source of protein, dietary fibre and many other nutrients such as Potassium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Mushrooms are the only non-animal source of Vitamin D and also provide large amount of the vital nutrient Choline.
